Can People Find Your House ?

You obviously know how to get to your house, but do others ? Its something that we take for granted, but fail to realize that our homes and businesss may not be marked that well. Sometimes house numbers get removed when painting the house and never get put back up. Other times shrubs and plants grow and obstruct the view. Take a look and see if someone driving down your house can easily find your house. Make sure the house numbers are large enough. Also make sure there is enough contrast so that they don't blend to easily with the surface it is mounted on. Think of it this way, If an ambulance where rushing to your house, would you want them delayed becasue they could not identify your house ? In addition to your house, make sure friends and family have an address plaque too !

New Architectural Cupola Series

We are pleased to announce our Architectural Series Cupolas, consisting of eight highly detailed cupola models that offer a level of craftsmanship previously unavailable. These cupolas feature all-vinyl construction using AZEK vinyl and copper roofs. Cape Cod Weathervane Company’s product expansion has been lauded by architects and designers alike as unique, but affordable decorating enhancements.

In addition, these cupolas have been engineered and designed to withstand winds up to 120 MPH. This new wind rating is especially desirable, as storm-force winds are more prevalent and frequent along coastal areas where New England-style cupolas are often installed. The increased wind rating also applies to the Select and Signature Series cupolas, also offered by Cape Cod Weathervane Co.

We're excited about this new cupola line, It fills a void that has been neglected by lumber yards, home centers, and building supply houses. Also by dealing directly with the manufacturer, we are able to save contractors and homeowners 25% to 40% off the cost. The cupola price listed on the website is the price paid. No shipping charges are added, All cupolas come with free shipping and delivery.

Scrub Pines on Cape Cod

Its funny how things can grow on you. We moved to the Cape in the late 70's and spent a year in a house on Main Street Osterville that Oak & Ivory now occupies. The back yard was 90% scrub pines and walking on the ground seemed like it could have been another planet. It was covered in pine needles and lichen and felt like you were walking on a sponge. Many of the scrub pine trees were half dead and small branches littered the ground still clinging to pine cone clusters. I remeber thinking at the time these were the ugliest trees I had ever seen. Many a yard were like that as well, native to the Cape, these trees were everywhere. Well that back yard is now a warehouse building and a parking lot. Many of the scrub pine back yards have been upgraded with manicured lawns, stone patios, and expensive plantings. Last week we spent a little time walking the trails up at the National Seashore in Ptown. Walking thru the groves of scrub pines brought me back and made me realize that I miss those silly old ugly trees. More that than, I miss a yard that didnt need to be maintained!

Please Pass the Butter..

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new flavourings....

DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?

Both have the same amount of calories.
Butter is slightly higher in saturated fats at 8 grams; compared to 5 grams for margarine.
Eating margarine can increase heart disease in women by 53% over eating the same amount of butter, according to a recent Harvard Medical Study.
Eating butter increases the absorption of many other nutrients in other foods.
Butter has many nutritional benefits where margarine has a few and only because they are added!
Butter tastes much better than margarine and it can enhance the flavours of other foods.
Butter has been around for centuries where margarine has been around for less than 100 years .

And now, for Margarine..
Very High in Trans fatty acids.
Triples risk of coronary heart disease ...
Increases total cholesterol and LDL (this is the bad cholesterol) and lowers HDL cholesterol, (the good cholesterol)
Increases the risk of cancers up to five times..
Lowers quality of breast milk.
Decreases immune response.
Decreases insulin response.
And here's the most disturbing fact.... HERE IS THE PART THAT IS VERY INTERESTING!
Margarine is but ONE MOLECULE away from being PLASTIC... and shares 27 ingredients withPAINT

These facts alone were enough to have me avoiding margarine for life and anything else that is hydrogenated (this means hydrogen is added, changing the molecular structure of the substance).

You can try this yourself:  Purchase a tub of margarine and leave it open in your garage or shaded area. Within a couple of days you will notice a couple of things:

* no flies, not even those pesky fruit flies will go near it (that should tell you something)

* it does not rot or smell differently because it has nonutritional value ; nothing will grow on it. Even those teeny weeny microorganisms will not a find a home to grow. Why? Because it is nearly plastic . Would you melt your Tupperware and spread that on your toast?

Share This With Your Friends.....(If you want to butter them up')!
Pass the BUTTER PLEASE

The New Jan Brady

Having had a blog for a little over a year now, it's time to make a change. My intial thought was it would be a great way to let people know about new product additions. Only problem is, either there is alot of new stuff, or nothing at all. Everyone seems to introduce the new additions in the spring, leaving content a little lop-sided other times of the year,
Other proplem is- Weathervane, Weathervane, Weathervane ... all we ever talk about is weathervanes (or cupolas, lanterns, door knockers, etc). There is alot more to me, and us as a company than just our products. We have families, we do things, go places, we eat out, we live in this beautiful place called Cape Cod. We even have opinions and whacky thoughts.
It's time to let our hair down. Make this blog more interesting to read as well as more interesting for me to write. I plan on posting 2-3 times a week rather than the once or twice a month. I will be going off topic. Letting you know of great new places on the Cape. Taking more pictures and posting them for all to see. Its about fun. I want to have fun doing this (which i do) and I want my customers and friends to have fun and be entertained reading this. Welcome to the New CCW Blog...

Revival of the Copper Post Lantern

Copper post lanterns are making a comeback. Beyond the particularly placed planters and whimsical wind chimes that adorn an exterior space, a copper post lantern can add an element of enchantment, brilliance and of course illumination to an outdoor or -- even an interior décor.

With the revival of the copper post lantern, at last - the old front porch light is outmoded. There’s no better way to punctuate the magnificence of any home than with a copper post lantern. The most prevalent places to adorn with copper post lanterns include the following:

Centuries ago, cupolas served as medium to circulate air and keep a stuffy room ventilated. Prevalently seen on rooftops, these square and vented structures are used, today, for one purpose only – to make a house stand apart from the neighboring domiciles. The best way to dress up a windowed cupola is to marry it with the perfect hanging lantern.

Brighten up a drab front exterior space with a copper lantern. The illumination from a post lantern makes it aesthetically safe and easier for visitors to find their way through your walkway, sidewalk or pathway.

To add an element of drama, juxtapose mid-century furniture with a period copper post lantern. At Cape Cod Weather Vane Company, lanterns come in a variety of metal finishes and glass options. For instance, the Lombard Post Lantern is available in an onion-styled seedy glass or pumpkin seedy design.

But, not all copper lanterns are made with the same craftsmanship that our forefathers once read by. Today, copper post lanterns are available in a wide range of designs, materials, finishes and geometric shapes. Consequently, buying a copper post lantern requires a little savoir-faire. Prior to buying a lantern, look for the following features:

 Impeccable craftsmanship
 Quality finishes
 100 % copper or brass (that oxidizes into a patina)
 Glass options – clear or seedy
 Durability
 Warranty (Cape Cod Weathervanes offers a lifetime warranty on their lanterns)

Using the Nickerson Post lantern as an example, this ornate lighting fixture is meticulously crafted of copper and bronze, showcased in an oval onion-styled design, available in a seedy glass or seedy pumpkin and is enveloped a wire cage (as seen at CapeCodWeathervaneCompany.com). Not to mention, the lantern is available in six different finishes.

Copper Post Lantern design strategy: Instead of using incandescent lighting for the exterior of your home, try to replicate the appearance of cascading moonlight.
